Blog entry #3 Trek to Biloxi (March 20, 2004 – March 25, 2004) Columbia, SC; Warm Springs and Pine Mountain, GA; Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island, AL

Thanks to Jean’s navigating ability and investigative skills, the trip to Biloxi, Mississippi and back was punctuated with numerous side trips, ranging from the historically mundane (speak for yourself, Dan) to the death defyingly harrowing (speaking for both of us).  A round trip that is calculated by MapQuest to be just under 2,000 miles, took us 2,450 miles and two weeks to complete.  The 450-mile difference represented the distance added by using state highways, county roads, and an occasional dirt path; and the inclusion of several side trips.  Only 4 miles were logged on Interstate Highways.

Places visited on the trip to Biloxi, Mississippi included in South Carolina, the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia; in Georgia, FDR’s Little White House and therapeutic baths in Warm Springs, Callaway Gardens and Wild Animal Safari Park; and in Alabama, Trails of the Gulf State Park, Gulf Shores, and Fort Gains, at the mouth of Mobile Bay.
